At The Doorstep Of The Great Outdoors

3.3 At the doorstep of the Great OutdoorsLocated at the base of Pikes Peak and on the edge of the Southern Rocky Mountains, Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs is at the gateway to stunning natural scenery and amazing outdoor adventures. To help you plan your trip, we’ve compiled a shortlist of some of our favorite outdoor adventures that will surely make your vacation even more remarkable.

Hiking

One of the best things about the hiking in Colorado Springs is that there is something for everyone. Whether your perfect hike is a leisurely nature walk or a strenuous climb to a stunning ridgeline, there’s a trail waiting for you here. Explore the breathtaking red rocks at Garden of the Gods or the lesser-known Red Rocks Open Space. See the waterfalls, mining tunnels, and mountain summits where locals prefer to hike in North Cheyenne Canyon. Or, wander the family friendly wilderness trails at Cheyenne State Park. Whichever trail you roam, you’ll find the beauty of natural Colorado all around you.

Biking

Here in The Rockies, mountain biking rules no matter what your speed. Beginners can learn the basics at Cheyenne State Park. More experienced riders can test their technical skills at Palmer Park, a 730-acre park located in central Colorado Springs. The whole family can pedal together along the midland trail, while speed enthusiasts and adventure seekers will love the rush of Captain Jack’s Downhill and The Chutes. Whether you ride uphill, downhill, or along the hills, Colorado Springs is the place where rubber meets the mountain.

Jeep Touring

A Jeep tour is perfect for those who prefer to explore the mountains with four-wheel drive. Climb the mountains and explore the exhilarating back roads of Colorado Springs without breaking a sweat when you take a Jeep tour. Watch for wildlife and take stunningly picturesque photographs while your experienced guide shares information about the geology and history of the area.

2.17 Elevate Your Golf GameEverything here in Colorado Springs is elevated, even the golfing. From amazing mountain views to the wide array of things to do, we take things to a higher level here. This also includes your golfing experience at our Pete Dye-designed course at Cheyenne Mountain Resort.

When it comes to golfing at 6,000+ feet, you’ve got to factor in the altitude. If you’ve never golfed at higher elevations before, you might be a little surprised at the impact altitude can have on your game. As Colorado locals and golf enthusiasts, we’ve put together a few tips for golfing amidst the Rockies, or on any high altitude golf course.

Basic Adjustment for Yardage

We’ll get into more specific concerns in a minute, but the most generic adjustment you can make when playing at a high altitude is to add 10% to your yardage. Why? At higher elevations, the air is thinner and offers less resistance than the air at sea level. As a result, a ball that would travel 150 yards at sea level will travel approximately 15 yards further at higher elevations.

Account for Trajectory

Every golfer has a different swing and style. The higher trajectory of your shots, the more difficult it can be to estimate your distance if you're used to playing closer to sea level. If your shots tend to stay low to the ground, you will see less of an impact on your yardage than if you hit high shots.

Altitude Adjustment

Clubs in need of adjustments or new grips can negatively affect your game at any altitude. Bring your golf equipment to our golf shop to have it checked out. Our staff of PGA professionals can evaluate your grips, loft and lie angles, and the shaft of your clubs and let you know if they might be impacting your game. Guests of Cheyenne Mountain Resort can also rent top of the line clubs from our Pro Shop.

Golfing in Colorado doesn't have to add strokes to your game. With a little attention to detail, we think you'll love playing our beautiful Pete Dye course as much as we do. For more information or to book you Colorado golf getaway, contact us today.
