Ever Wondered about the History of Cheyenne Mountain?

One of the fun things to do in Colorado Springs is to learn a little about the history of Cheyenne Mountain.  The area grew in popularity during 1956 when the commander of the Continental Air Defense Command, General Earle E. Partridge, suggested that the Cheyenne Mountain Colorado Springs complex be constructed. The General envisaged an underground center for combat operations that would replace the above-ground facility that was located at Ent Air Force Base. Cheyenne Mountain

It was agreed that the complex would serve as the base to the North American Aerospace Defense Command. You will find the complex just outside Cheyenne Mountain, towards the southwest of Colorado Springs.

Today, the complex serves as an alternate command center and also as a training site for new crew recruits.

Horsethief Falls/Pancake Rocks
There are three main trails in Horsethief park which can be found just off Highway 67. Get a good look at the beaver ponds or head off on the Pancake Rocks trail where you will climb through several switchbacks and take in the amazing views west and south towards Cripple creek.

Cheyenne Mountain State Park
This is one of the most recent additions to Colorado’s state park system. The park lies right under Cheyenne Mountain and offers some 20 miles of trails that vary in difficulty. Along the trails you will encounter pines and rock gardens, stunning Limekiln Valley views and possibly even an owl or two.

Manitou Reservoir Trail
If you want to take a hike away from the crowds, this is the trail for you. The path of the trail descends to the base of Manitou Reservoir and you can carry on along several different paths. This is a slightly more challenging hike.

Red Rock Canyon
You will find Red Rock Canyon Open Space just south of US-24, between Manitou Springs and Colorado Springs. There are plenty of trails to choose from along the canyons and some fantastic views of Garden of the Gods await. There are also off-leash dog loops and a free riding bicycle area.

Catamount Trail
This moderate trail begins in the town of Green Mountain Falls, climbing all the way up to the South Catamount Reservoir. Once you get to the top of the switchbacks on the hike you enter a soft grassy area, Garden of Eden. You can then continue along the creek and over to the South Catamount Reservoir dam. The trails in this area are fairly easy-going.
